Malta Granted Citizenship Through Naturalisation to 339 People in 2022
According to the data provided by the Parliament of Malta, of the total number of people who were granted Maltese citizenship in 2022, 284 of them were men and 55 of them were women, AtoZSerwisPlus.mt reports.
Even though the number of those who were granted citizenship through naturalisation last year may seem high considering the rules that Malta has, it still remains below the 2021 figures, when Malta granted citizenship to a total of 421 people.
Regarding the number of refusals, Malta Today explains that the Minister of Home Affairs, Byron Camilleri, said that the country denied citizenship through naturalisation to a total of 1,372 people, suggesting that the country received over 1,600 citizenship applications in 2022.
Commenting on the high number of refusals, Minister Camilleri said that those who had the right to remain in the country were not affected and this means that the majority who filed an application were not eligible as they did not meet certain rules.
As for the nationality of those who were granted Maltese citizenship, the authorities did not reveal any specific data. Nonetheless, they disclosed that Ukraine, Russia, Palestine, and Israel were part of the list of countries whose nationals were granted citizenship. In addition to the above-mentioned, Camilleri said that no one withdrew their citizenship in 2022.
