Malta Welcomed 136,167 Tourists Last January – Majority of Them EU Citizens
Such data show that during this period, a total of 124,151 inbound tourists visited Malta for leisure purposes, and another 7,764 came for business purposes, AtoZSerwisPlus.mt reports.
A total of 41.1 per cent of incoming tourists were aged between 25 and 44, followed by the 45-64 age group with 31.2 per cent.
Meanwhile, as for the countries that made up the largest total number of inbound tourists were Italy, the United Kingdom, and Poland, with 42.2 per cent.
More Nights & More Money Spent by Tourists in Malta in January
Further statistics for tourism in Malta noted that in January of this year, the number of nights spent increased by 79.0 per cent compared to January of last year, thus exceeding one million nights. The majority of tourists, or 79.2 per cent spent their nights in rental accommodation establishments. Meanwhile, the average length of stay of the total inbound tourists was 7.6 nights.
According to the data from the same source, tourists spent almost €99.1 million during January 2023, which is an increase of €52.2 million compared to the same month of 2022. In addition, the average expenditure per night was estimated to be €96.1.
In January of last year, a total of 49,117 incoming tourists spent their nights in rental apartments in Malta, while during the same month of this year, the figure reached 117,775 nights.
Based on the data of the National Statistics Office of Malta, regarding accommodation without rent, tourists spent 10,616 nights in January 2022 compared to 18,392 nights registered in the first month of 2023.
French & German Account for Highest Number of Tourists to Malta
Moreover, Malta registered 46,478 tourists from the European Union in January last year, compared to 95,037 tourists who arrived this January.
Among the countries from which most tourists visited Malta in January 2023 are the following:
- France – 10,797
- Germany – 9,094
- Italy – 23,148
Last year, Malta welcomed 2.3 million visitors, representing 83 per cent of the pre-pandemic total. At the same time, the Polish, Austrian, Italian, and French markets also exceeded the levels of 2019 during 2022.
During this period, total tourism expenditure was estimated at two billion euros. However, there was a decrease in total expenses per capita to €880 from €899 in 2021.
According to the Maltese authorities, the total number of tourists who arrived in Malta during December was 136,423, while the entire nights spent reached 967,108.
