Maltese Employers Are Misusing Indian System by Applying for More Workers Than They Need, Minister Says
The Minister warned that employers are applying for more employees than they need, AtoZSerwisPlus.Mt reports.
Taking into account the high number of applications that are being made for workers that are not needed, the Minister said that several businesses are dealing with a lack of personnel.
According to Lovin Malta, the Minister said that the misuse of visa applications needs to be addressed and, at the same time, confirmed once again the government’s plan to hire more staff at the India High Commission. The latter deals with visas from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Maldives, and Sri Lanka.
“We could also note that some people were applying for more workers than they actually needed. This only helped aggravate the situation further by creating a more unnecessary backlog,” Camilleri said.
In addition, the Minister said that, among other reasons, this matter needs to be also addressed due to the Schengen obligations that Malta had.
He noted that while the economy of Malta must be helped as much as possible, the situation of visas must be addressed too.
Workers currently have to wait for months before they can apply for a visa despite having a work permit. The waiting times are long, even in the cases when workers pay an extra fee for their application process to be accelerated.
While some can not book an appointment since no slots are available, several others have been told that their work visa has been denied due to a lack of information related to the intention of their visit to Malta.
Citizens of other countries who wish to work in Malta or any other Schengen Area country need to have a National D-type visa.
Each member country of the Schengen Area has its own visa policies. Thus, employment visa criteria, requirements, and application processes depend a lot on the labour needs of each country.
In line with the standard rules for a European employment visa, applicants need to complete the application form, provide two identical photos, a valid passport, roundtrip flight reservation, travel medical insurance, proof of accommodation, employment contract, proof of academic qualifications, and proof of language knowledge.
This type of visa needs to be submitted to the body that represents the country where a person will be working, such as an embassy, consulate, or a visa application centre.
