Vienna, Malta and Kosice Airports Register 4.1 Million Passengers, Exceeding Pre-pandemic Levels
According to a report issued by Vienna Airport, the number of passengers managed by the Flughafen Wien Group has risen by 0.8 per cent beyond the passenger volume recorded in July 2019, AtoZSerwisPlus.mt reports.
“Several major projects will be commencing soon, showcasing the dynamic further development of the Vienna Airport hub. Work will begin soon on the Southern Expansion of Terminal 3, the Helios Logistics Park and our third hotel. Vienna Airport is also taking off when it comes to climate protection,” Member of the Management Board of Flughafen Wien AG, Günther Ofner, pointed out.
These data also show that the total number of passengers at the Airport of Vienna reached 3,144,573, which represents a growth of 13.4 per cent compared to the same month of last year.
In addition, the total number of passengers handled in July 2023 was only 0.5 per cent below the level recorded in July 2019.
In July of this year, Vienna Airport saw a year-on-year rise in domestic passengers, reaching a total of 2,394,120, by 18.5 per cent. However, transfer passengers showed a slight decrease of 0.4 per cent, to a total of 741,754.
At the same time, the month also witnessed a positive trend in flight movements, with an increase to 21,779 flights in July 2023, a growth of 12.7 per cent compared to the same period in 2022.
The collective number of passengers departing Vienna Airport and heading to Western European destinations rose to 1,065,687 during July 2023, showing a rise of 9.5 per cent compared to the same period in July 2022.
Further data reveals that Eastern European traffic witnessed an increase, accommodating a total of 296,176 passengers and marking an increase of 14.0 per cent. Even passenger traffic to North America showed a positive recovery, with figures reaching 54,317 passengers, a notable increase of 7.9 per cent from last year.
Similarly, the number of passengers to African destinations experienced a growth of 30,234, showing an increase of 2.6 per cent. Middle East passenger volume also increased to 106,670 passengers, marking a 28.1 per cent surge. The number of passengers embarking on journeys to Far East destinations also increased to 47,036 or 139.2 per cent in July 2023.
Last month, another airport that saw a rise in passenger volume was Malta Airport, thus reaching 848,716 passengers and showing a growth of 23.2 per cent. This surge places the airport 6.3 per cent above the pre-crisis passenger level recorded in 2019.
Likewise, Kosice Airport experienced a more modest increase in passenger numbers, accommodating a total of 96,872 passengers and an increase of 1.1 per cent. This figure stands 0.7 per cent higher than the number recorded in 2019.
